Course Overview & Philosophy

Welcome to ELA! In this classroom, we focus on inspiring academic excellence and discovery. Together, we will explore diverse voices in literature, master the fundamentals of persuasive and narrative writing, dive deep into grammar, and cultivate a love of thinking deeply. As Mountain Lions, we operate on a foundation of mutual respect, individuality, and experiential learning.

6th Grade Year at a Glance

Unit 1: Foundations of Literature & Narrative Writing

Exploring voice, theme, narrative structure, and personal storytelling.

Unit 2: Persuasive Rhetoric & Active Debate

Analyzing argumentative texts, spotting bias, and drafting logical, persuasive essays.

Unit 3: Poetry, Prose, and Figurative Language

Deepening our creative expression, exploring slam poetry, and masterfully employing literary devices.

Unit 4: Informational Texts & Academic Research

Conducting primary research, evaluating sources, and mastering academic citation integrity.

Unit 5: Dramatic Literature & Performance

Reading dramatic scripts (including classic Shakespearean works), analyzing performance, and practicing public speaking.

Unit 6: Novel Study & Experiential Connection

A collaborative, deep-dive class novel study connecting literary themes to our local community and environment.

Grade Weighting Breakdown

Policy Compliance: Our categories are weighted 50/50 between major benchmarks and routine class progression assignments, reserving homework and participation strictly as supportive, non-graded pillars.

North Carolina Grading Scale

Standard Scale: TMCS adheres strictly to standard NC grading thresholds to assure equitable and standardized assessments.

Key Campus Expectations

📅 Late & Make-Up Policies

Late submissions allowed up to **3 calendar days** (-10 points per day). Absences yield a **3 school day window** to turn in assignments without penalties.

🔒 Digital Pouch Policy

Devices (phones, smartwatches, wireless headphones) must be locked in your school-provided pouch before the school day begins. Unpouched devices are sent directly to the office.

🥾 Outdoor-Ready Dress Code

Learning frequently moves outdoors. Wear robust shoes suitable for long walks, and maintain appropriate, respectful apparel coverage.
